A "Drum Circle" is a gathering of people who come together to play drums and other percussion instruments in a circle, creating music spontaneously and often without prior musical experience, with the focus on creating a shared rhythmic experience through improvisation and communal participation; essentially, it's a group of people making music together by drumming in a circle, where anyone can join in regardless of skill level.
I was introduced to the Drum Circle experience as an intervention for stress, and as a form of self-care while on Pre-doctoral Internship in Little Rock, AR in 2002. I remember the calm that was produced and an intense sense of relaxation I experienced mentally and physically in my body. Afterwards, I felt as though I had received, a relaxing full body massage. Consequently, I became intrigued by the beneficial aspects of drumming on participants emotionally, cognitively, physiologically, and socially. Research, as well, as individual testimony from participants support the positive and beneficial nature of the Drum Circle experience.
When I returned to Virginia in August of 2003, I started collecting various Djembe Drums and other percussion instruments to facilitate Drum Circles with large groups. Since that time, I have facilitated over 75 Drum Circles on various occasions and with varied groups of people: young adults; family gatherings; Sorority and Fraternity events; Founder's Day celebrations; Mother's Day and Father's Day celebrations; Holiday celebrations; Graduation celebrations; Black History Month celebrations; Kwanzaa events; Corporate and College Renewal days; Self-care/Relaxation workshops; Conference break-out sessions; Board of Visitor presentations; Corporate Team Building programs; and Health & Wellness events.
